Downloading and Installing the Update

Like usual, you can update iTunes either by downloading the new version directly from Apple’s web site at http://www.itunes.com/download or simply choose the “Check for Updates” option in your existing version of iTunes.

The iTunes 10 download itself comes in at approximately 71MB for both Windows and Mac users.

Initial Startup

During initial startup, iTunes 9 will take some time to convert your existing iTunes library to the new format . A typical iTunes user can expect this to take no more than 10 minutes, but if you have a big iTunes library, you will want to allow more time for this to convert.

Further, it appears that even once this process has completed, quite a bit of background processing is still occurring in iTunes 9. At the first couple of hours, iTunes’ performance was mind-numbingly sluggish on my larger iTunes libraries, and even the smaller test libraries took a few minutes before the application become responsive. Our initial response, and yours as well, might be to conclude that iTunes 9 shows abysmal performance, but rest assured it gets quite a bit better once you allow it to do whatever it needs to do in the background.
